Patouda - Lemony shortbread rolls
These delicious lemony shortbread rolls folded around crushed walnuts and almonds are a traditional Cretan-wedding treat. In the city of Ierapetra, Patouda is usually seasoned with sesame seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and sweetened with honey.
Amigdalota - Traditional Almond Macaroons
Offering Amigdalota at the end of the ceremony to the guests is a tradition followed throughout Crete, first met in the city of Neapoli, and the rest of the Greek Islands. Amigdalota were traditionally served on lemon tree leaves and their sweetness symbolizes a sweet start to the couple’s new life.
Xerotigana - Fried Honey Pastry
Xerotigana is a traditional Cretan dessert. The town of Sitia is renowned for its excellent kind of them. Made from thin sheet-like dough, fried into a crispy package that is drizzled with honey and dusted with cinnamon and ground walnuts, they are offered as a treat from the parents of the bride and groom, along with other delicious local pastries.
